Kingfisher East Bengal managed to scrape past Salgaocar FC in a keenly contested Round 21 I-League match played today at the YBK Stadium, Kolkata.
The match started as per expectations with both sides launching scathing attacks on each other. East Bengal striker Baljit Saini came close to scoring in the 7th minute but failed to beat the onrushing Salgaocar keeper Karanjit Singh. Similarly Edeh Chidi had the East Bengal custodian at his mercy in the 13th minute but could not keep the ball down as his shot swayed over the horizontal bar. It was Salgaocar FC who had greater possession of the ball in the first half but could not make inroads in to the enemy half as the Nigerian Uga Opkara stood towering in the East Bengal defence.
Salgaocar FC could well have taken the lead in the 20th minute as Edeh Chidi’s superb effort by header was dubiously cancelled out by the referee who signalled him offside. Chidi came close to scoring again in the 28th and 34th minute but his effort went agonisingly over the bar. Both the teams had a good chance at the goals but went into the break with a 0-0 score line.
As the second half started, East Bengal came close to scoring a couple of times but their strikers failed to connect with the ball. However, Tolgay Ozbey finished a fine move by Robin Singh in the 54th minute as East Bengal looked set to take the game away from Salgaocar. Tolgay was left unmarked in the danger zone which resulted in the match winning goal. Salgaocar stepped up their pressure by bringing in Milagres and Beevan D’Mello to sharpen the attack and the duo managed to create some really close chances.
One must say, there was a dubious decision by the referee without which, Salgaocar could have definitely given better results. Raju Gaikwad, in a bid to clear Salgaocar attack, had clearly handled the ball inside the box in the 69th minute but the referee chose not to give it a second thought.
Overall, the game lived up to its expectations for the Sunday crowd assembled at the YBK stadium. With this win, Salgaocar FC has moved to 4th spot and one point behind Mohun Bagan while East Bengal has moved to the second position behind leaders Dempo SC.
Salgaocar FC will host Air India in Goa in the 22nd round of I-League on the 31st of March.
